Victoria and Her Family at the Beach

Mercy and her husband, Tom have invited Victoria to join them on holiday at the seashore.

The proud new papa of one still sports his fatherly mustache while wearing the grey stripe bathing costume that we're so accustomed to seeing him in.

As for both Mercy and Victoria, this year the two cousins will be wearing the very latest in swimwear. Most women then tended to wear something on their heads in order to cover their hair, but not our two young Victorian women! Both have appointments with a hairdresser for later in the afternoon. By then, both will have changed clothes following bath time. After that, everyone is looking forward to a casual teatime in their family suite at the hotel with the baby, when it will be Nanny's evening off to visit a friend.

As for Mercy and Tom's new baby, the little one is still a bit young to be out of doors all day long. We are allowing Mercy to have a nice, relaxing afternoon swim. This is her family's first chance at a holiday since the arrival of the baby in March. The baby's new skills have grown very recently to include rolling over. This caused much excitement, as all were present for that special moment. 

It's Nanny's turn to look after the little one for the afternoon today, especially as it is now nap time. Then it will be time for a promenade using a fancy stroller that was called a perambulator (we called them baby buggies here in the U.S.). For more about the baby, you'll have to wait for a later post. That will keep you guessing, won't it?

A Trio of Horse Pictures

Any one of these would make a fun coloring project. 

I especially like the first of the three, the one of a stable scene. The dog has chased a cat up onto a window ledge. The cat is pretty feisty. The horses are wondering what all the fuss is about. I think it's fun.

Next up is a lady riding sidesaddle over a fence. She sits so confidently. I have to wonder about her posture in the picture and that jump she's taking atop her very pretty, bright eyed horse. I'm accustomed to seeing riders that are at least a little bit bent at the waist. Maybe it's about her corset?

Lastly, there is a plainer picture that is an illustration from an old magazine. This one gives a brief look into the various ways that some horses are trained to move. The gait being shown is called a "canter." I will include a short video (8 minutes long) that offers three strides for a horse. The first, of course, is a simple walk. The second is a trot, and the third is a real canter. A canter is a gentle, flowing style of running gait, kind of halfway between a trot and a full blown gallop. Sometimes, it is called a "lope" or "loping gait." It looks really comfortable if done well enough. I see it as beautiful. It takes a strong canter in order for most horses to be able to take most jumps safely.

A second video is about the importance of balance in maintaining your seat during a canter.

Une boutique très chic !

While out shopping, the two cousins have come upon a very fancy dress shop. Mercy and Victoria, being first cousins, share a grandmother. They are determined to share costs and to lavish some nice gift or other on their Grandmother Lacey whom they both admire and love very much. Mercy's husband, Tom, is at a shop nearby having himself fitted for a new suit of clothes for his work. He might even treat himself to a dashing new opera cape over an evening suit. We shall see.

This pretty shop was designed in the Art Nouveau style, a style that began as a sort of artistic movement in many cities during the late Victorian and even Edwardian periods of history. Its basis I have altered, for it was a poor quality old print taken from a book on design. Notice the very frilly stained glass above the door and along one wall, as well as the blue and clear glass fancy work of the two front doors along with the special window. The rug was a later addition of my own, still art nouveau in tone. I later chose a very pretty cabinet of the same style on which to display some of the shop's wares. 

Next came the same design of hat in 4 different color ways, along with stands for three of these, a few band boxes and some pretty shoes. The dress form displays the green day dress near the doors.

Included with this post is Victoria's color way version of her dear cousin's striped dress with parasol. She can wear almost any color, can't she? This was fun for me to do!  The two do enjoy dressing alike without being completely identical. After all, they are best friends, cousins, and as close as fond sisters.

Soon, their travel time will be nearing its conclusion. All too soon, it will be time once again for Victoria to attend to her studies so that she can complete her education and begin teaching. Blessed with good fortune, she hopes to become a very fine teacher and to inspire every young pupil to value every fresh opportunity to see the world, visit new places, and (most of all) to have a passion for learning. She herself has learned much during her travels about foreign customs, languages and places. She has met many different people and seen a variety of new landscapes. From now on, a number of the places shown on the maps of her atlas at home will bring back memories of times of enjoyment and adventure.

Pretty Striped Paper Doll Visiting Dress

Mercy has a new dress!

And isn't it pretty? It had to be refitted by me from the original to this doll. I have also changed the coloration of it to reflect a different look, plus altered the parasol so that it can look white and fresh as a daisy instead of dull and grubby.

Mercy, her young husband and Mercy's cousin, Victoria have been aboard a steamship which has brought them to another landing place. Can you guess where they might have gone since their exciting stay in Venice? I'll reveal the new stop on their tour very soon.
;)

Some tips on fitting Hat Tabs to their matching hats:
It is probably best to begin with the top edge first, with the gray colored Tab against the back of the actual hat that it's matching in both shape and size. Many times, I've included decorations near the tops of hats which make good starting points for this process.
I prefer to use a really good glue stick whenever working with such paper projects, such as Yuhu brand, although I do like to keep some 3M brand in my crafting supplies and this works just as well. Please wait for the glue to dry, even if it is from a glue stick. Once it isn't tacky enough to stick to either the paper doll's head or face, just try it on the doll and keep adding bits of glue until it won't slip and slide off. 
Lastly, trim away any excess that could spoil the looks of the doll. This I think works best as a final step and using small scissors - in my case, I'll often use manicure scissors with a sharp tip for such refined work.

Mercy, Tom and Victoria Visit Venice!

Or, as it is said in Italian, "Mercy, Tom e Victoria visitare Venezia."

Included in this Set is one new outfit for Mercy, shown first above the Scenes. 
How exciting! They have found themselves a bit muddled by the confusing layout of the city. Notice how the two cousins are dressing today almost as a pair of twins might. (After all, they have the very same dressmaker back in London, and it is such fun to dress alike!) They wore the same outfits with different shoes during their time of packing for the journey. Alas! The three travelers have wandered away from their true course and are now concerned about the hour. But not to worry. Our young linguist, Victoria, comes to the rescue! She asks a pleasant looking elderly woman (using her practiced conversational Italian), "Buon pomeriggio, signora. Posso chiederle come per il modo corretto per noi per raggiungere il Palazzo Ducale? E 'nelle vicinanze?"

Which means, in modern English, "Good afternoon, Madam. May I inquire as to the correct way for us to reach the Doge's Palace? Is it nearby?"

Tom applauds his wife's cousin's quick witted way of handling the situation. He himself has very little Italian. His real foreign language gift is with French. Mercy, meanwhile, is very proud indeed of her young cousin's growing foreign language skills. As a result and very soon, they find their way to an ornate outer courtyard of the Palazzo. While still there, they will have another adventure which I shall post here quite soon. This involves yet another famous Venetian palace. But that will be for another day.

The season that is best for travel in Adriatic waters cannot last forever. The three intend to travel southward next, this time by boat. Tom will have plenty of time for relaxation from that point onward, so that they are certain to have even more fun than when he was so busy.

Meet Tom, Mercy's Husband

Mr. Thomas DeHaven is soon to have a few new things to wear!

This project took absolutely forever to make! There for a time, I thought that I really would not be able to make it happen the way that it has. However, on a little by little basis, while I kept working on it, I kept noticing new ideas and a few small successes that helped to keep me motivated.

This doll has had to be redone 4 different ways. I found myself practically tearing my hair out at one point, as it simply didn't look right, even after several hours of trial and error with it. So I then put it away for a few weeks, waiting for some further insight as to why I could not make it appear any better. It was actually quite UGLY at one time, though nobody else would know it.

I am mainly a collage artist, although I have drawn and painted using a variety of media as well. Whenever using Photoshop, it pays to know how to collage as well as how to add perspective to different bits as they are being put together. Making things relate to each other is very important to the process. Regular (meaning cut and paste manual style) collage does not always allow for such things, but Photoshop does, thankfully. This I found quite handy in the end.

For, just look at our Tom! He looks young, accomplished, healthy and ready to play at the seashore already! You can believe me, friends, when I say that in the beginning, this project was looking perfectly awful. For example, my first try with this doll had him built a bit too much like he was working outside all of the time, and that lifting heavy objects was his job.

Now, there is nothing wrong with a buff, muscular man to my way of thinking. Some of them can be really quite handsome, too. But as Tom was an oarsman while he was attending college, and has since worked mainly in antiquities at the British Museum, I did not see how I could justify too sturdy a frame for this doll. He simply would not have been built to be as muscular as my first design had made him to look.

Since that time, though, I've found a number of ways of fixing the look of this doll until he could be youthfully attractive without so many muscles. That's much more in keeping with the story, to my way of thinking.

So that is the longwinded story of my adventures in making this very longwinded and much awaited project!

For his very first outfit, I have chosen to give him a summery suit built for travel and sightseeing. He holds his straw hat in one hand, and wears a soft neck cloth instead of a workday tie at his neck. This was considered casual wear among those whose work dictated that they wear more formal clothing at all times.

Women Cyclists of the 1890's Graphic

Let's head for the hills with our hats pinned on securely!

Isn't this old illustration both interesting and fun? The women being shown in the foreground are covered, literally, from the neck down, and yet they have been exercising during warmer weather. I find that somewhat astonishing, don't you?

The woman in blue is wearing "bloomers" or a form of knee-length cycling trousers. Her hat has a slightly masculine and sporty flair, while the cut of her suit's jacket shows a definitely feminine (and corseted) figure. Notice her sensible, flat heeled shoes. Such a style was viewed as being innovative at that time.

The woman in pink is dressed less for sport and more as though she might possibly be on an errand of some sort. Women were really set free by their modern bicycles in the latter part of the 1800's and could be found free wheeling from place to place in dry weather on roads in town and country during the late 1800's. This continued on into the early 1900's. Nowadays, bicycles are seen as commonplace for sport and for commuting.

This brief clip from the series, "The 1900 house" can give us a small taste of what cycling must have felt like for women during that late Victorian era, when cycling for women was becoming more and more respectable and less and less disliked byVictorian critics of women's sports.

Such an adventure this would have been for any woman!

Victoria's New Butterfly Dress

A pretty new outfit for Victoria to wear while still on her European adventure!

This outfit has been a genuine challenge for me. It began as a charming French fashion plate, but had to be completely redone before it could even begin to fit the doll properly.

It was the butterflies located on the sleeves that first gained my approval of this dress. The color seemed a little odd to me, and so that has had to be changed. A tan colored dress with a vivid, pretty magenta butterfly somehow did not look right to me. I prefer the soft celery green I've chosen. After all, it is still summertime. Victoria will have plenty of time in which to wear the browns of autumn later on in the year, won't she?

I found a charming embroidered pair of shoes for her to wear, one of which is peeping out from under the hem of her dress. This style laces up at the front, and so should serve her fairly well for walks in refined places such as museums and art galleries. The color has been changed to match the other magenta features to this outfit.

The sleeves and the upper front of the bodice I chose to make sheer for a lighter and cooler appeal. Summertime in Italy is generally very warm and sunny. She is using her parasol (hidden behind the skirt of her dress as she is walking) as a sort of a walking stick at the moment. She is prepared to, at a moment's notice, make use of the shade it can provide her with.

Paper Doll Scenery: A Pretty Palazzo

Victoria and Mercy's travels continue with a visit to a very pretty place.

The palazzo is located on a large estate with lush lawns and plenty of places to go walking. ("palazzo" means "palace" in Italian) It is very near to the sultry city known as Milan, but called Milano by Italians. The two cousins are here, of course, with Mercy's husband, Tom, who has an important business appointment to keep for an elderly relative of his. Though Tom has been kept busy throughout, he still will make enough time for his young bride during this extended European sojourn. They plain to dine together at a fine restaurant this evening.

As Mercy and her sweet cousin are strolling and exploring the gardens of the palazzo, they happen upon this charming, sunny room. They both wear their very nicest things for an outing of this sort. Northern Italy (especially Milano) can be quite sunny and warm this time of year, so the two both carry their parasols. One mustn't develop either freckles or a tan! No Victorian young lady would ever have taken such a risk.

Very soon, they will take a further carriage ride back to the Hotel. From there, within a few days, they plan to take a train for another fascinating place! I will leave you to guess where they might be headed.

Victoria's Day Dress 3 Ways

Victoria and Mercy are still staying at their friends' countryside villa.

Today, they have been catching up on their letter writing as well as setting aside some time for walks on the grounds that surround the villa.

The sleeves from elbow to cuff of this fresh and pretty outfit are made of sheer silk voile. Despite the high collared style, this kind of dress was worn often during warmer weather in Victorian times. The dress began as an antique fashion plate, which I later altered significantly. I thought that Victoria's wardrobe required something with sheer sleeves. I hope that you'll enjoy playing with it even more than I have enjoyed making it fit the doll for you.

Paper Doll Travel Room + 2 New Outfits!

Mercy and Victoria are visiting a charming villa.
Can you guess where that villa is located?

Victoria and Mercy have each acquired new dresses to wear for special outings. Today's outing will be in a charming countryside villa. I will let you guess where.

The last time that I posted a new travel set here at PPS, the dolls were enjoying the fresh breezes and pretty view along the River Rhein. The basis for the scene was a very old painting.

This time, the basis for the scene is a pretty nook in a charming Villa. This was an interior design plate from an antique book. Notice the charming summer furniture and the pretty wallpaper. The original picture had to be added to, updated, and often painted over using Photoshop. I hate to say it, but it was in need of much tender loving care.

I have changed the colors a little bit, including the colors depicting the countryside outside of the windows. I added some sun at the window in order to justify some shadows underneath the furniture. I also added some carpet, as the original picture showed no flooring of any kind.

Mercy's Outfit or Ensemble
I hope to dazzle guests with the two new paper doll outfits this time. Which one of the two do you prefer? Mercy's is an updated and upgraded Photoshopped version of an old antique paper doll outfit. This needed a complete overhaul, along with a better fitting hat. For Mercy's hat, I had to comb the archives in search of an old magazine fashion picture of just the right angle and design. Even that has had to be reshaped and updated a lot. Despite the time that I've put into this project, I do hope that you will agree with me that the yellow dress is  a fashionable and pretty addition to Mercy's wardrobe.

Victoria's Outfit or Ensemble
For Victoria's new ensemble, I used just fashion plates from her era of the 1890's. This one is a French design, as is the design of her hat. I have to say that I really do like that hat! (But then, I've always enjoyed hats and have even collected some on occasion.) The pleated organza would have been both very expensive and very tough to keep looking nice, and so this will be a rare treat for Victoria as she and her cousin stay for a visit at the countryside villa. 

More New Scenes and Rooms to Be Added Soon!
The outfits for both dolls could certainly be played with using a number of scenes and rooms. I will soon be able to offer at least one more before the autumn weather. After that, I already have others in the works for you. As for a paper doll of Mercy's husband, that is turning out to be a rather difficult project. Please be patient with me about that. Most fashion plates from Victoria's era do not involve any men at all.
