September Set: "Black-Eyed Susans"

The first of 2 September Book Arts posts...

...before I go on a bit of a health hiatus for a while here at the Studio.

The colors that the end of summer brings can be bright and promising. This set has been inspired by the flower known as the "black-eyed Susan." I love that pleasant blend of golden yellow with a deeper orange, don't you? Some "Susans" come in a variety of colors, but I prefer this orange-y yellow the best.

Please respect my copyrights and follow the red letter Guidelines listed at the foot of this post. Thank you.

The set requires 2 circle punches, one in the 1 inch size, the other in the 1/2 inch size. For some examples of how I like to suggest that people might use my sets, please follow this link HERE and look for the Display.

Happy September Creativity!

ATC Acrylic Pour Background Set: Hot Flash Lava Lamp

Today's freebie is another color way of the "Acrylic Pour" series of ATC Background Sets. This time, the theme is "Hot Flash Lava Lamp."

As I mentioned previously, this began with my second try at using the technique known as "Acrylic Pouring" or "Poured Acrylics." The "cells" that developed in this small pour are so very tiny that it is difficult to view them without a little help. So I took a few pictures and then played with it for a little bit using Photoshop. I had to zoom in an awful lot before the "cells" could be enjoyed.

This led to my musing as to how to play with some photographs I had taken of this experiment using acrylic pouring. There have been 2 other colors before, Aquatic and Fuchsia. More recently, I posted one entitled, "Peanut Butter and Hot Chili Peppers." These are fairly recent posts, so all you have to do is to scroll down just a little bit and you'll quickly see them in other posts. I've already offered a duo of envelopes with labels to match as well, which you will no doubt find on the way when you scroll.

Happy weekend creativity!

Rainy Day Spring Set

"April showers bring May flowers" is a very old rhyme which is the theme of this brand new Set.

The Set below is complete with matching Accessories such as Photo Corners and Button Alphabets in 2 colors. My next post will offer two further free downloads. These could be used in gifts or cards for Mother's Day as well as for year round creative fun.

For Personal Use Only
This is not a set to use in anything you make that is to be for sale.
The reasons are as follows:
Parts of this set must not be sold for certain legal reasons. Unless you have purchased a license from the digital brush designer, Mel Rodicq Creative, the Fancy Edges patterning used by me for this set may never be sold under any circumstances. (For more information, please follow the link, HERE) Those parts include the Trim (located at the top of the Download) and the Backgrounds (for those, please follow this link HERE
Everything else you see here is 100% mine, none of which I am offering to be used in items that are for sale. This is a Special Set. The digital brush designer whose free brushes I've used for this project has copyrights, too. Please respect all copyrights listed and follow the red letter Guidelines listed in this post. Thank you.

The illustration that inspired this new Set is from Victorian times when crinolines, petticoats and decorated bonnets were in fashion. The three girls are sheltering from a retreating rain storm under one very large umbrella. They seem happy in each others' company, don't they? I've chosen the three colors that were featured most often within the illustration in the other Downloads. Note how there are two colors of trim, along with their matching buckles, plus two 1 inch buttons and two 1/2 inch buttons in the first Download. The same buttons I've used in my new 1 inch Button Alphabets (same colors).

For the Alphabets, you will need only a 1" diameter circular paper punch or cutter. For the rest, a 1/2" diameter one should be sufficient. As for the Bonnet Badge, it is 2 inches in width. Perhaps a circle cutter would work better for that item if hand snipping using your scissors wouldn't be your choice.

The entire Set is a PPS Exclusive, and that includes my new Bonnet Badge that can be made into a sticker or decal or else collaged as is onto your surface of choice. Everything has my copyrights, so you mustn't sell anything you see here, even if it is altered by you or someone else. This protects my copyrights and at the same time allows you to have my stock to use for free.

Posted below in order of appearance, is the first Download, followed by the Accessories.

The matching Background Downloads, one in Pink and one in Blue, will be offered in the next post. You may follow the link HERE for both (Please see the red letter Guidelines and Credits there as the same rules apply to both the Backgrounds and this set. thank you).

#ATCAD2017 7th and Final Post for ATC Freebies Week

This last post is all about playing with the framing of Artist Trading Cards.

This project began with a piece of ephemera I found in my travels but that required many changes before it could be presentable. It really was a mess to start with!

Please respect my copyrights and follow the red letter Guidelines listed at the foot of this post. Thank you.

Three of these frames have been derived from a single bit of online ephemera, that of an old menu with a window cut in its front page. I found it in the digital collections of www.nypl.com, but this was quite a while ago. Since that point, it lay buried in amongst a load of other ephemera files I had found here and there. Today, it finally gets its chance to shine. From an artistic standpoint, these might be sandwiched, as it were, between layers, leaving something peering from their diamond shaped windowpanes and with other things overlaying them. It could be fun!

The remaining three frames were self generated using Photoshop processes and features in my old and handy PSE8 (I know - who knew anything so outdated could continue to be so useful?). I went for simplicity along with narrowness and vividness of color with those three. Very challenging to get each differing one to look right with the initial trio. These frames may be merely printed onto card stock and finished without cutting into them, but they may also be cut to resemble physical frames. Such cuts need to be carefully done, of course. Perhaps either a trusty X-acto Knife or extra careful use of a good cropping station will do for such a process.

#ATCAD 2017 ATC Freebies Week: Day 4

Still more to come for ATC freebies Week here at PPS.

This time, I've taken my inspiration from 2 antique wallpapers. One has the "distressed" and shabby look, while the other one looks as lively as the day when it first came off the roll.

Please observe all Credits and copyrights shown below and do follow the red letter Guidelines listed just below those credits near the foot of this post. Thank you.

As with Wednesday's post, I've included matching labels and fastener buttons. All buttons are designed to fit either 1" circle paper punches or the 1" setting on an adjustable circle cutter.

What a fun assignment I gave myself recently! Once I'd made the ATC Backgrounds Set (shown second, below), I knew that I'd want to play some more with the two papers I'd chosen. That was actually what got me started on making new ATC Envelopes to match for this week long project in the first place.

In the Kitchen with Mercy and Victoria

I had to build this one from the ground up - a real challenge for me! This post includes 1 new room + 1 new outfit for Victoria.

The kitchen is lit by gaslight, not electric lightbulbs, as will be the remainder of Mercy and Tom's first household together as a young married couple. Although there were some places where electric lighting was being used during the 1890's, for many more moderately well off families (mainly middle class) it was considered a high priced luxury.

This project has been on the drawing board now for weeks and weeks. This work has copyrights. Please respect my copyrights by following the red letter Guidelines that are listed at the foot of this post. Guidelines will sometimes vary from post to post, so please read all carefully. Thank you.

How I built this kitchen scene
It began simply enough as a whim for one more room, this time of the more practical sort. The basis for it was actually of much poorer quality than required. The furnishings may have had styles authentic to the place and time, yet the art depicting them made the final effect almost look grimy.

So where to begin? It actually began with me "rebuilding" the entire room as well as refitting it to the dolls.  It felt a little bit like redecorating a real room. New wall coverings got tried, but nothing made me smile until I'd created some new wallpaper in a fetching stripe. The flooring was redone entirely from "scratch," as we say in the U.S. That was a fun project in and of itself. The stove in the basis picture was definitely authentic in that it had been placed inside the older kitchen hearth. Further research showed me how some households with newer kitchens then had slightly larger ranges in niches and nooks decorated with wall tiling.

I finally found just the right range, and then a tiling image I'd been saving for just such an occasion. A few color changes later and the entire kitchen began to be real enough. I added the pretty floral tiles to match the cheery feeling of the wallpaper. The cabinet on the right hand side of the room is actually a kitchen "dresser." We might call it a "buffet" or a "cabinet and hutch" duo. This kind of furniture often was kept and passed on to the next generation, as it was not installed for permanent purposes and so could be shifted from one home to another. This needed a genuine overhaul, and so I used digital "wood veneer." Perspective, shadows, highlighting, and scale (size of each thing in relation to the rest) were among my biggest challenges. I've kept this one on file still in PSD format (unfused, all layers) as a sort of a memory book of the process the project required. The rest of the picture I will explain in the story for you now.

For Some Basic Instructions and Tips on assembling any one of my Paper Doll Rooms, guests may choose to follow the link HERE.

The Story
Victoria had a  little bit of vacation time leftover before her school days were due to resume, and so she has stayed with Mercy in her new home. The two have been very happily busy adding finishing touches to the charming place. Tom had to travel again for his work, so the two have been having an entirely feminine time of it together.

The two cousins have been preparing their favorite selection of sandwiches, salad, soup and desserts. Victoria is ready to finish some of the tidying up, while Mercy has already taken a moment to change into her lovely, comfy teagown. It is Victoria's turn to change into her own cute teagown next, as soon as they move everything from the kitchen into the parlor. Both young women are very hungry after their day's exertions of decorating and tidying up after themselves.

A cook is to be hired in time for the arrival of Mercy and Tom's new baby, along with a general maid of all work to do the extra cleaning. Maids of all work were some of the hardest working women in England during Victorian times. Some middle class households did employ them to do most of the work. If Tom advances quickly enough in his career, then further staff might have to be acquired and a bigger house purchased. For now, we can admire how family members have given Mercy the lovely new range with its bright tile border along with the necessary furniture for this kitchen.

The kitchen has been equipped to keep the household running smoothly. The stove will heat every bit of hot kitchen water that's to be used by the young family.  Notice the big brass tank located on the wall between the stove and the old fashioned scullery sink. (Please don't ask me how such a set up would have worked, for I've no idea)

Tom and Mercy have been blessed with their very own hot water plumbing for an upstairs bath, too. Though a rarity for many (particularly among more struggling populations), by the time of the story, a number of moderately well off families had just such a modern convenience. Having to lug a tin tub around would not do for a first time mother - at least, that is the general feeling among the three grandparents-to-be.

Mercy's cat looks quite content to sit atop Tom's mother's step stool, doesn't she? She's admirably sleek and healthy looking, a cute kitty. But don't let her sweet face fool you. No adventuresome mouse would ever dare to step foot inside of her kitchen!

My favorite little detail in this room is one that might get overlooked. It is the bright and shiny copper pot located on top of the range. Such pretty pots were often used for warming the milk necessary for hot chocolate and cocoa. The two cousins plan on having some warming cups of cocoa just before bedtime.

By the middle of March we should see a little bundle of joy with them in this loving home. More rooms will hopefully be ready to be revealed between now and then, as well as some new clothing for the papa-to-be.
;)

Autumn Checkers - Canadian Style!

This fun game was invented a long time ago, yet it is still enjoyed by millions today!

This new board and game piece set is specially designed to be a part of the Autumn Garden Collection, begun last week here at PPS.

Please observe and respect all copyrights and red letter Guidelines here, especially for this particular copyrighted design of mine. Thank you.

"The most popular forms are English draughts, also called American checkers, played on an 8×8 checkerboard; Russian draughts, also played on an 8×8; and international draughts, played on a 10×10 board. There are many other variants played on an 8×8, and Canadian checkers is played on a 12×12 board."
This is from Wikipedia's article about the game of "Draughts" or "Checkers" as we call it here in the States.

"Checkers dates back to the 12th century, in France.[2][1] There are two main types of checkers played: the Anglo-American version (which originally came from France) and the Polish or continental version. The Anglo-American version is played on an 8x8 checkerboard with 12 pieces. The continental version (so-called because it is played on the continent of Europe) is played on a 10x10 board with 20 pieces each. There are also a number of variations in various countries."
The writer of that article skipped the Canadian version, didn't they?
:)

For my own game board, I've chosen to use the same size that our Canadian friends like to play on, which is 12 squares by 12 squares in size. 18" x 18" is what my big board will be, once completed. This will allow for each square to be slightly larger than one inch on all four sides.

Some online sources left me puzzling about the varying size discrepancies for both boards and squares. For example, one source said that each space on the board should be 1.5" by 1.5" square. But this made no sense in terms of math for some board sizes. I was quite frankly puzzled at first! After all, 12 squares border all sides of the Checkerboards used in Canadian style draughts (pronounced "drafts.") or checkers. 12 squares x 1.5" = 18".

Other sources later claimed that every square should be exactly one inch square. Some even claimed that the board must be 8" x 8" (such as the article above), yet that would make the board smaller than an average sheet of printer paper, wouldn't it?

Anyway, as soon as I saw all of the varying sizes, etc., I decided to decide for myself instead of following all of that varying advice. In fact, I went with the Canadian style (probably because of an old movie I was watching at about the same time which took place in Canada).

Below, the first thing to be shown is a Display model of the completed board with a pretend game in its first steps. Directly following that Display will be a list of the 4 downloads, each one labeled as per usual.

For complete instructions on how to put together the 18" x 18" board, I'd like to suggest the Instructions and Hints at one of my Paper Doll Room posts HERE. The techniques for both projects should be very much the same.

This game does have pieces or tokens. I'd like to suggest the use of small wooden discs, such as craft and hobby stores often carry for these. The size should be no smaller than 1.25" or one inch plus one quarter across. That is the exact size of each of the circular pieces I've created for the set. Another option might be for chip board circles of the same size, 1.25". I imagine there are various tabletop die cutters that might be useful for such a project, as would a 1.25" circle crafting punch. Cork or felt padding  on the underside of every piece will help to ensure the life of the board.

Each free printable download comes with 6 game pieces, 3 pieces per design, so that once all 4 sections have been printed, so will all 12 game tokens have been.

As most home printers have ink which runs when wet, some wide enough clear packing tape could be very useful for putting together your tokens (or checkers). Glue stick is an old favorite of mine for paper projects, however, perhaps double sided tape (the strong kind often used by crafters today) would work best, as it is applied without dampening anything and is sturdy.

Remember that you can always save the 4 downloads as files and reprint them if you need to.

Below the Downloads and the Guidelines, I will offer a video of the game's basics for beginning players.

Happy Autumn Playtime!

Autumn Garden Set: Croquet, Anyone?

For anyone who's ever enjoyed the out of doors in the early fall, this new set might be for you.

The two main colors I've chosen to use for this new part of the Autumn Garden Collection here at PPS are bittersweet and blue.
Bittersweet, the plant, may be highly poisonous, but the colors it displays certainly aren't. The blue of this set has many different tonal attitudes. I think of it as "blue with a mellow attitude."
:)

Please respect all copyrights and red letter Guidelines at the foot of this post. Thank you.

The bittersweet colors of autumn are some of my favorites. These are shown in the lady's bustle dress adorning the pockets. It is a late afternoon croquet game that she is playing. I have added leaves upon the grass, for that is what you will find in many places on a sunny and warm autumn afternoon.

There are 2 styles of badges for this particular set, Sunflower and Croquet. I have included two lace backgrounds, both made using a Digital pattern by artist, babypink (name is a link) over at Brusheezy. The copyright for the Digital Lace Pattern (entitled, "Spetts") is as follows: "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. You may redistribute, remix, tweak, and build upon this work even for commercial reasons, as long as you credit this artist by linking back."

Displayed first below are two optional idea images for you, one in Bittersweet and the other in Blue. After that will come the Downloads and the rest of the Displays.

A Leafy New Autumn Collection

Autumn leaves! What could be better?

The sky seems to deepen in tone just enough to be noticeable this time of year, as the cooler temperatures paint every leaf a shining new color.

Please see the special new copyrights and Guidelines below this post's downloads. Thank you.

I have some thanking to do now. You see, I had lost some of my edge on creativity, and was really bored with everything that I'd just completed. I didn't realize just how in the doldrums I'd been until I happened across a new video by creative crafter par excellence, Shemi Dixon. (name is a link) That playful, lighthearted attitude of hers was just what I needed in order for me to snap out of my dull mood and into some more creative playfulness! This led me to playing around with a few favorite fall colors and using my Photoshop playfulness for a change. The result: an entirely new collage made from leafy patterns along with a contented me.
THANKS Shemi!
:)

Included in this set will be a number of new items from which you may choose. Please be aware that certain copyrights had to apply in this case due to the materials and brushes used. (which see below)

Shown first is the new Pocket Set that is for book artists and crafters of all sorts. You'll notice the new badge style is made using an image of some antique leather along with a copyright free leaf. That particular item, along with the gemstone and antique glass buckle, are copyright free, with no strings attached. The same would apply towards the photo corners (4 in all to this set).

It's the collage which makes up the main body of each pocket and the trim at the top of the page that have certain copyright rules added. I am sorry for any confusion this could cause, and so will try to make things as clear as possible for everybody. Basically, it's OK to use everything here just for fun in your own personal world. It is NOT OK to sell the copyrighted things without permissions or licensing or attributing, depending upon the item. (Whew! -seems complicated! Please don't let it bother you, though. I promise it does get easier!)

The second, the simple Frames and cutouts Set, has copyrighted digital brush images throughout. A digital brush is not exactly easy to explain to the uninitiated. Each one is an image that is created for use with Photoshop programs. Some images look a lot like a natural brush stroke, while others have unique shapes, such as leaves or flowers or even buildings!

The list is simply endless of the types of images to be had on the digital brush market anymore! I've collected and used only free brushes that do oftentimes have copyrights. I then follow the instructions as to crediting or attributing, and so on, so that I still get to give everything away free for you here at Plush Possum. Since this blog is all about Free images for creative use, this works well as long as the guests here will follow the example that I try to maintain for us all.

The third Set in this collection is just like the second, in that it is based upon that leafy collage design I mentioned above.

For the post that started this Collection, you can follow this link HERE.

Once you've read my list, you will quickly see how simple it really can be to get the gist of copyrights and sharing where digital brushes are concerned.
:)

Garden Set: A Late Summer Butterfly

Or, a "pocket full of posies," as the old rhyme says.

I ran across this set of pockets when I was looking for something else in the Studio's files recently. I've decided to finish it and to also add two styles of the same patterned background.

Please notice and mind the copyrights and red letter Guidelines at the foot of this post. Thank you.
Note: Background Photoshop Lace Pattern is by babypink (name is a link) over at Brusheezy. The copyright for the Lace pattern (entitled, "Spetts") is as follows: "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. You may redistribute, remix, tweak, and build upon this work even for commercial reasons, as long as you credit this artist by linking back."

The basis of this pocket duo and their accessories and backgrounds is, of course, a lovely old painting of a basket full of flowers and a charming butterfly on a windowsill. It is a favorite still life painting of mine, almost in my Top Ten list. I hope you will enjoy it too.

The items in the Set barely fit the dimensions for the average copier paper. Consequently, the borders are very narrow, a mere 1/4 of an inch. If your printer has the capability to print without any borders or margins, I'd recommend using such a setting. Otherwise, the narrower the better for this particular Set.

I'd also like to recommend card stock or stiff paper such as matte photo paper. This will make your pockets and accessories last a lot longer. The flaps or tabs, of course, are meant to be folded under, tucked out of sight and glued to your chosen surface. Double sided tape might be wise, or perhaps Uhu brand glue stick glue.

The Lace backgrounds I have made to work in two separate directions: Horizontal and Vertical. The Horizontal one I have featured in the suggested use Display, shown first below. Both colors come in both directions.

Let's enjoy the last few weeks of real summertime with our
