#ATCAD2017 ATC Treasure Box Project

I have a special fondness for useful, decorative boxes, don't you?

This year's June Artist Trading Card fest, #ATCAD2017, really got me going. Even though I am not celebrating by making any new ATCs, I have made something which can hold a whole bunch of them. This is my first ever dual blog post. Downloads are included in this blog only (see below), though. To see my other, smaller blog, you may follow the link HERE. Please respect my copyrights that are listed in the red letter Guidelines located at the foot of this post. Thank you.

Here's what my project's interior looked like once it was completed. As you can see, I'm already storing some ATCs inside my new creation. I hope you'll enjoy the process I went through for this project. The construction of this Treasure Box was a bit tricky at times, but overall it's a fairly easy project for just about anybody to make.

I used a 140 lb watercolor sheet from my  18"x24" Canson Montval Watercolor block, but even a single sheet of watercolor paper in the same weight will work once primed using gesso.  Single sheets (I recommend getting at least two) may be purchased from Art and Hobby stores.  I have often used heavier weight watercolor paper with acrylics as the results can be really interesting, sometimes almost leathery in feel. For this box, every additional coat of pigment or medium really made the paper tough and a little bit more on the leathery side.

The technique which I chose to try for the decorative part of my painting was acrylic paints + 91% Isopropyl Rubbing alcohol (surgical spirit in the UK, I think). The layers have to be applied and treated with speed, otherwise the effect will be minimized or simply won't occur at all.

On the watercolor block top sheet of paper I first added matte medium in 2 layers. I'd begun that project with the idea of creating something semi-transparent using colorful glazing techniques, but later chose not to. Overtop those few layers, I added my turquoise in at least 2 layers. Once it was dry, I next added a very runny but still thick layer of copper that I'd tinted slightly for an"antique" effect. I splashed drops of the alcohol all over the surface right away and watched the turquoise underneath begin to peer out in surprising ways. It still didn't work completely well enough, although I could see that I was headed in the right direction. So I let everything dry overnight, then tried it again from the beginning with first more turquoise and then more copper. This time, I had the right formula for the thickness of the copper paint!

As a finishing touch, I then added a dash more of the turquoise in 2 toned splatters using a loaded paintbrush which I tapped just inches above the surface. I allowed those paint layers a nice, relaxing drying time of (as I recall) several days.

As the paint layers were still drying, I began a first mock-up using graph paper. As a base or mold, I used a vitamin powder packet box that I noticed fits ATCs a bit snugly. The snug part was the clue. To build a brand new box with a totally different construction and lid became the goal.

While the paint layers were still drying, I began a first mock-up using graph paper. As a base or mold, I used that vitamin powder packet box that I noticed fits ATCs a bit snugly. The snug part was indeed my first clue - this allowed me to figure out that my new box would probably fit ATCs a bit more loosely, thereby not damaging them. You see, my building a refit from the outside would add to the size a bit on all sides. To build a brand new box with a totally different construction, look and lid became my ideal. And the fewer the seams, the better.

Once the fit to the graph paper pattern was finalized, I carefully removed my painting from the watercolor block using a smooth edged blade to separate it from the glue edging, then traced around the pattern on the back of the painting and carefully cut it out. The orange pencil marks made everything simpler with the next step. These did not show once I'd lined the inside of my Box.

A T square ruler really came in handy for scoring. This project is the wrong size and shape for a scoring board - but then, I currently don't have one anyway. Tip: if you should decide you'd like to try making my box using your own decorative skills, please be aware that to score and fold first prior to adding the lining is essential to the success of this project.

Below is how the unassembled Box looks when marked, scored and carefully folded. There is a somewhat trickier fold than usual in the Lid area. Notice how the top of the Lid is a tiny bit broader across the top? Please do pay close attention to the dotted lines of my download when scoring. The added width is there in order to allow the Lid to fit smoothly down over the top lip of the Box.

Prior to bothering with any prep work for the lining, I paper-clipped the box at its join spots to see whether I had got the fit just right. I am delighted to say that everything about this went well.

(sighing) Lovely, creamy Mulberry paper - the best thing I could think of for when a thin layer of something decorative would work best.

Prepping the Box's interior for its lining is the next step. Notice how the folds held steady for me even after the gesso had been added. I attribute this staying power to the heft and sturdiness of the paper along with all of the many layers of pigment on the outside side of it. Though I neglected to photograph it, my next layer was one in the verdigris Turquoise. Once the Mulberry Paper lining was being adhered using Liquitex Heavy Matte Gel Medium, notice how the turquoise showed through. I left this to dry lying open and unassembled overnight.

The next evening, I began gluing the box together - I did this backwards, unfortunately. It would have been simpler to have begun with the back rather than the front. Lolz My enthusiasm got the better of me!

Lastly, I glued the Lid so it would hold its shape. Already, I could see the possibilities for the decorative portion.

The following morning (this past Wednesday), I was up with the lark and working on making my very first paper tassel. Although I'm not altogether pleased with how it turned out, it can always be replaced later on. I began by coating a single sheet from an approximately 3.5"x5" tiny pad of some luxurious Italian paper. The paper is Velata by Cartiera Magnani. It's actually made for drawing, although it took the Turquoise acrylic quite well, as you can see in this photo. (BTW, I have looked it up and the Italian word, "velata" means "veiled.")

Next, it was time to play a few "dress-up" games with this box. I am still not quite satisfied with the the way in which it turned out, but I left certain areas un-glued in order to make any new changes a bit easier later on.

Next, I added a bit of embellishment to the top of the Lid, as outlined in this next photo's caption below. One bit of advice: never construct this box using 2 already decorated pieces that are joined together at the lid "hinge" fold area. Too many layers and too much stiffness would make it less usable. it really is best to make a one piece version if you choose to use my own Pattern.

For anyone who may be interested, downloads of the Pattern are in this post here at my main blog, Plush Possum Studio. Please see below.

I'd really enjoy your feedback as to how this project works for those among you who are into making your own approach to my #ATCAD ATC Treasure Box.

His and Hers Bookplates

These might make a fun gift or party favor.

These two separate sets are based upon an old bookplate that was designed by someone else. I have chosen to take the idea and to run with it, so to speak. Originally, this bookplate was only a "His" bookplate, and with a man's name above the cat and its book.

Please respect my copyrights by following the red letter Guidelines at the foot of this post. Thank you.

Several changes had to be made to the original. I took apart the man's name (that very handily allowed me to use the required "E" and "R" for "HER") and reassembled a few bits. I've also had to make some repairs to both cat and book. I then shifted direction by making the whole thing look like new without (hopefully) losing some of the antique charm provided.

Happy Reading and Book Arts Creativity!

Pretty Spring Tags

Matching Tags for my new Spring Garden Collection

Please see the red letter Guidelines at the foot of this post. Thank you.

The butterfly tag at center is not  a matching part of any sets to this time, but I liked its old freckled face and charming handwriting. Someone once took the time to pen those words for someone special. The phrase reads: "A token of love from me to thee." This would be fun in a birthday card design, perhaps, or all on its own.

All 3 tags are meant to be played with using whatever will strike a downloader's fancy. I'd like to suggest using white card stock when printing this new tag set, but regular printer paper might do very nicely, too.

My 2 last posts here have mix and match styles and color ways that could go with the tag set. The first of those 2 has a lovely green background download, while today's more recent one has a lilac colored one.

As an added little bonus, I've also included 3 cute little colorful wheelbarrows for you to play with.

Happy Creativity!

In the Pink with PPS

One Background plus Matching Accessories

Everything from collage to gift card making and Artist Trading Cards may be made using this new 5 item set. This started with Photoshop and my own design ideas. You see, I was in the mood to be "in the pink"!

Please read all credits and red letter Guidelines in this post. Thank you.

First up below is the Collage Background. This has 1/4 inch borders, by the way. I normally tend to use 1/2 inch borders instead, but I wanted you to be able to play with as much color as possible this time. White card stock might be a wise paper choice. This works with most home printers.

Next, there is a page of nothing but Tags cut from the same background. These 3 tags might be printed onto card stock, or else glued onto the card of your choice.

Then there is a set of cute pockets, all in the same pattern. these have a few accessories in with them. I thought these would be fun for card making and journaling, although your ideas might say otherwise. There are 2 more smaller tags in with the pockets, too.

Next in line is the ATC card and matching envelope set with a few collage bits to use. The envelope design is by my favorite free template resource, Mirkwood Designs. The templates there may be had for free, although never, ever sold out of fairness to the person who is allowing us to use them + her instructions for free. Thank you again, Ruth Zarnoff! A link to her website full of wonderful things is HERE

The final item is yet another Ruth Zarnoff Design from the same website mentioned in that last paragraph. It is a cute little Bonbon gift box. This would be best printed onto white card stock as well. The margins for this item are 1/4 inch as well, so be sure to check your computer settings first.

A final note:
All digital art brushes used in the making of this pink patterned set are by www.obsidiandawn.com except for one  that may no longer be found at the source (brusheezy.com).

Best Friends Graphic

Two friends warm their hands together.

Good friends delight in each others' company. Real companionship stays warm year round.

I found this graphic on a hunt for something entirely different. I'll tell you quite honestly here: this illustration was one solid, gritty mess all over. It was the warmth between the two happy, smiling friends which held my interest.

Originally printed in a magazine in 1913, when color prints for periodicals were not as developed as they are today, it had to be refreshed and then cleaned up. This took hours of work, and I am still not completely satisfied with the end result.

The Guidelines in red, below, are specific for this particular graphic.

I think that this could be easily fancied up or altered in craft projects or collage. Carolyn Dube's fun pan pastel videos (at YouTube) might offer a few good ideas. Wet processes would smear and smudge any copy printed from a regular home printer. One suggestion would be to take a home copy to your local copy center which has a Xerox toner based color copy machine, the kind with stiff, smooth paper. I've had great results in the past when using regular wet art processes with such Xerox copies. FedEx was of great help for this. However, alcohol based products might not do as well on such a surface. I'd stay with water based paints only with such copies, or else experiment first with a second copy.

So here's to the warmth of friendship all year long!
Happy creativity!

Full Steam Ahead for the New Year!!!

Steampunk Greetings to color or to give

This newest addition to the Steampunk Category is a fun one, I think. This picture makes me yearn to be able to ride the rails behind a steam engine once again. I do love all different sorts of trains, but steam powered ones are my reigning favorites.

Displayed below are 4 different versions of this fun steam powered graphic. Two have the greeting (black and white or sepia), while the other two are plain (both colors again).

For all of the Studio's fun Steampunk Party gear, please follow the link HERE. Just skip down a few posts once you arrive there to begin to find the Steam items in the collection (masks, a game board, invitations, etc. Please follow all red letter Guidelines for each. Thanks!).

2 Tag Sets in New Colors

Two new tag sets + two new matching collage pages are included in this post.

It all started when I finally took the time to begin sorting my messy filing system. (This could take months!) There it was (tucked away n the wrong place), a lovely older version of my favorite antique marble paper. I hadn't realized that I'd kept the original. Into Photoshop it went then, and after several minutes of experimenting with a few new colors, I was glad that I'd tried. To this was added a second marble paper, this time smaller and deeper in tone, but equally pretty. This has given a two-toned look throughout these Gift Tag Sets.

I think that the following sets might look well with either silver or white tissue paper, or perhaps plain silver regular wrapping paper. Silver and white curly ribbons might be very festive, likewise. But you decide!

Book Artists Set #6

If the shoe won't fit....
....make art with it! Both shoes in today's set have matching marble collage pages, one of each color. You'll notice, of course, how their colors would also go nicely with yesterday's Tag Sets, found at this link HERE.

In other words, today's finishing post includes Digital PNG and Print JPG versions of the Accessory Set, plus one page each of the pretty marble paper in the matching color way. So now you may use any one of the components in this collection for either gift wrap purposes and/or for your book design.

Please read the red letter Guidelines below before use. Thank you.

Included here is also a link to a fun freebie site called Mirkwood Designs. At the site may be found a number of fun and pretty templates for making fancy and special paper boxes, etc. There are also Instructions there, and these are free as well.
You are allowed to sell whatever you make using Mirkwood Designs' template collection, although you may not sell the artist's templates as is. Ruthann Zaroff has been very generous with her gifts of many multi use templates there at her site, so let's be generous in return by being fair to her. (NOTE: You are not required to donate to the site, although perhaps a few dollars might help Ruthann's site to keep supplying the public with free, fun design ideas and items)

For a shortcut to her Template page, you may follow the link HERE. Personally, I like her little gift boxes best of all, although her envelope collection and her ATC templates are really quite nice, too.

3 Colorful Tag Sets

Time for lots of tags!

It's that season when lots of gift giving occurs. In honor of the occasion, here are 3 sets of tags to choose from. Styles range from the foldable kind to the plainly shaped yet decorated, to Basic regular plain.

The antique marble papers being used have had to be altered significantly. The tag template used is one of my own devising.

The colors chosen were obvious, although I intend having alternate colors here for you very soon. No matter which holiday you choose to celebrate, the variety being offered will hopefully be to your liking.

Below are the Download Links, one per each set. Be sure to read the specifics in the list in order to receive your choice. (Oh--and sorry for the confused numbering of these sets. I'll try harder from now on to be extra careful about that)

Happy Holiday Creativity!

Free Paper Doll Shopping Outfit

An outing with some shopping for Victoria

A guest has come to stay for a while at Grandmother Lacey's stately home in London. It is Victoria's favorite aunt, Aunt Mattie. The two have just been shopping at their favorite Millinery shop, to buy some spools of lovely ribbon. The ribbon will soon be made by Aunt Mattie, Grandmother Lacey and Victoria into lengths of hair ribbon for the girls of a school for impoverished children. Other things will be given to each child, including small toiletry kits. There will  also be socks for the boys.

The kitten playing  with the length of bright ribbon in Victoria's hands is one of the new brood which the cook's cat is mothering. The little scamp must surely have escaped from the warmth and dull security of the comfortable box near the kitchen stove. Somehow, I do not think that Victoria minds having a little fur ball romping at her feet, do you?

Recipe Card Divider Set

Free Recipe Card File Dividers (4 sets of 3)

The Recipe Cards are going well, so I thought that it was high time to finish the set by offering some unique dividers for you. The pattern is from the Pretty Papers collection here at PPS. New colors have been added to the pattern, and these are complete with tabs for all 3 main positions (Left, Right, and Center). Each tab is two inches across, leaving just enough room for your handwritten categories. NOTE: For this project you will require a corner rounder punch of some kind as fussy cutting takes far too long and the top tabs really do need to be rounded at the corners.

For the Card Set, simply follow the link HERE.

All told, there are 4 sets of 3 each. The parade of colors starts with soft neutral tones, which are followed by a succession of other, more vibrant colors. I do hope that these will all prove useful to you.

Card stock
For me, this project really needs tougher paper than average copier or printer paper. I recommend highly the use of white card stock paper only, as otherwise your colors might come out looking kind of strange or murky.  This should be easy enough to acquire at an Office Supply store or Copy Center. The dimensions are (in USA terms) 8.5 inches by 11 inches.

Printer or Copier Settings
These sets have unusually narrow margins. Ordinarily, I've tended to use half inch margins on all four sides at least. These have mere quarter inch (one fourth inch) margins. It is best to narrow the margins in your settings prior to your first print. No margins at all might work out even better, as this will allow a complete print of each set.

Happy Cooking Creativity!
