A Standard for Victoria the Paper Doll

Finally! The new standard has arrived!

Unfortunately, nobody's tested it yet, so I am awaiting the inevitable comments from others who were able to try this pattern and get it to function for them (or not, as the case may be).

Construction Instructions come in every download. (Try saying that sentence 3 times, in rapid succession!) Please read the red letter guidelines at the end of this post. Thank you.

This Pattern (or Template) may or may not require an overhaul, but let's trust that it won't! I trust that my guests here or at G+ will apprise me as to how well the standard fits and/or will or will not work for them.

Perhaps we'll know tomorrow?

In the meantime, here is the first attempt that I have ever made at creating something of this kind. I've made a few boxes, and even paper decorations and envelopes. Yet, this was a new thing for yours truly.

Let's try one and see, shall we?

NOTE: Mercy paper Doll has her own separate display which should fit her somewhat different shape.

Happy Playtime Creativity!

A Coloring Page for Moms and Daughters

A Victorian Coloring Page

Mother is in the Nursery, helping her little girl with her clothing for a new morning. This old illustration from the 1890's was simply crying out to be made into a coloring page. Right away, I knew that this would be a quick and easy process, as the quality was already suitable for coloring. It's free and likewise in the Public domain!
:)

ALL Moms are "working moms."
And all little children deserve good mothering. So let's hear it for those hardworking moms who are the unsung heroes of family life.
Have a good and safe weekend, everyone!

Presenting Victoria's Very First Room!

Her Grandmother's Cottage Sun Room!

This is a new idea Which I'd been working on figuring out how to do. It's been in my mind for some while how little girls love to have a setting that's pretty when they are at play with dolls.

Well, now they will be able to have their very first room for the Victoria Paper Doll Set, with a little help from a parent or some other responsible and helpful relative.

(By the way, Grownups who loved paper doll playtimes as children are certainly welcome to play with the dolls and their clothes for fun. Please read all Guidelines, in red, in each post. Thank you.)

The Display (below) is how the finished product will mainly look once done. I was unable to preserve all of it for you due to some fit issues. But once it would fit a home printer machine's settings for half inch borders on all four sides, I was relieved. I simply cut away small amounts until it would fit.

NOTE:
There will be extra positioning room (about one quarter inch) ONLY between the horizontal or crosswise edges of each of the 4 pieces. Consider it to be as a simple puzzle in 4 sections, cut down the middle in both directions. The extra positioning room is NOT included along the central downward or vertical line. I simply could not think of any other direction to take.

SIZE of FINISHED PRODUCT:
This will be around 20 inches wide and around 15 inches tall once the pieces are all together.

SUGGESTIONS:
Crafting outlets will often have what are known in the States as "dioramas." Such simple folding screens, generally used in science fairs or school displays, could be white, or any other color that you might enjoy using.

As other rooms are to be offered, perhaps the printable pieces of Room No. 1 in this New Collection would be best carefully glued to some other, separate surface. These could be interchangeable rooms, using either one or two diorama screens. I imagine poster board or thin, tough cardboard. These then could be hung or somehow attached to your diorama screens.

Quick shifts of direction when children play might mean that easy re-attaching of such playful scenes would allow each one to change scenes at will. While I am not certain as to how to finish this project, I do know that a sturdy cardboard box of the right height and width might just as easily serve.

If there is no straight edge cropper in the home, usually most copy or extension centers offer free use of such a gadget. They likely also will have larger tables than normal. This would allow for repositioning when you are in the process of cutting.

GLUING
I would not worry about glue except for 2 things: the first thing is that more home copiers than not would allow the printed pieces to smear even if glue sticks were used. The second is, that regular white glue tends to make paper bulge and buckle. My suggestion is to find a Copy Center with a Color copier by Xerox or something comparable. I've usually had great success gluing and painting over such slick surfaced prints as may be made using such copiers. The paper has a stiffer, sturdier feel to it as well as being tougher.

Clear sticky shelf paper might be useful here as well, as a finishing touch for protecting the surface.

For those of us in the States, Fed Ex has been known to have such fine color copy machines. The pages could be printed at home, then filed in case of emergencies once the color copies are made using the special slick paper and toner at your local copy center.

Free Paper Doll Sunday Dress

Victoria's New Look now has her old dress looking entirely new!

Please read all credits and red letter guidelines at the bottom of this post. Thank you!

I've often dressed up for Sunday morning services, and enjoyed it immensely. It seemed to feel good to put on some of my best clothes, to polish my shoes, and to do my hair just so for the day.

And here is our Victoria, doing the very same thing, only in her very old fashioned attire for Sunday. This outfit, as you'll soon see, is designed to go mostly with the New Look Paper Doll No. 4, although I suppose a clever person might be able to alter the hair which is attached to the hat with a little careful cutting.

More colors will soon be ready, along with other hair colors attached to the corresponding hats.

The dress has had to have the shoulders redone, and the skirt is now long enough to where the doll's black school shoes won't be showing.

Up next, you may expect a series of fun paper doll items to share with children. I will attempt to add an accessory set here as soon as possible. This will hopefully include a fully functioning standard, so that dolls may be left to stand on their own.

Rooms (as in dioramas) are likewise in the works. Some of these were already on file at the Studio. They will need some work, however. There is one which may need a little revision here or there. Included will be Instruction which will hopefully be seen as helpful.

Thank you for stopping by with your--

Color No. 3 for the Geography Lesson Ensemble

Don't you simply love being given choices?

I know that I do! This came out well enough that it has surprised and pleased me very much. I still enjoy the first outfit best, yet I've enjoyed offering more than one hair color choice with the hats of this set, along with new colors for the doll's clothes.

Please read the red letter guidelines beneath this post. They really do matter. Thank you.

Color No. 3 is a plush deep green. I still really enjoy the look of those puffed sleeves!

Fitting Hats to this doll
I like to think it's an easy enough thing to do. Truthfully, with printer problems in the Studio's office slowing progress, I haven't been able to test any of the new things as of today.

So here is the Geography Lesson Outfit, with a separate printable Cape and Hat Set. Both have download links below their titles.

Free Paper Doll Party Card or Invitation

Why not have a Paper Doll Party?

UPDATE: This is the NEWER, much improved version. It has cleaner lines, a lot more lace, and the top looks more refined to me. Have fun decorating this fan your own way!

It occurred to me the other afternoon, while on a break, that there already has been for some while a stock of several fans available for free here at the Studio's blog.

{Please read and follow all Credits (in black) and Use Guidelines (in red) below. Thank you.}

The Idea
Then an even happier thought struck my brain: Why not make a Fan Invitation or Card for Victoria's fans (so to speak)? I have been finishing slight upgrades for several days, including making the doll look a little bit better. This was then followed by a set of 5 different hair color choices, so guests could begin choosing.

More outfits have been added recently, including a new favorite of mine, the Geography Lesson outfit. Believe me, this was a labor of love. I really do enjoy history, including what people wore once upon a time.

The Details
The flowered border at the top is from an old illustration of  forget-me-not flowers. The tiny mother-of-pearl buttons which border the soft central oval frame are from my own collection. I believe that they are either blouse or sleeve buttons. They may have been used on a child's outfit once. (It's actually one button which I duplicated once for a different project, but never mind all of that now! LOL)

All brushes used to embellish this fan are from brusheezy.com (as I recall), and are designed by obsidiandawn.com.

So without further ado, here is that Paper Doll Party Fan Card/Invitation. I suppose it also might be fun to use as an ornamental object of some sort.

More Paper Doll Party Supplies have already been dreamed up by yours truly! I suppose that I am paper doll crazy this month!

New Colors for Victoria's School Outfit

Skirt with Blouse + Cape and Hat in a New Color Choice!

This has become a Paper Doll month for me here in the Studio.
Go ahead! Ask me if I've had fun!
:)

Thus far, there has been a remodel of the Evening Wrap, an update to the doll's look, with 5 new color choices in a fetching new hairstyle, and a brand new Scholarly side to Victoria Lacey coming out for the very first time.

Please read the credits and red letter guidelines below posts here at the blog, and then follow those guidelines so we can keep free things free. Thanks so much!

The scholastic outfit, entitled, "Victoria's Geography Lesson," was added onto with a short cape (or cloak) and a matching new hat for her.

Today, that Cape and Hat set are being offered in a new color choice, as is her skirt and blouse set for the classroom. They should fit well enough. Just let me know as problems arise, please. Thanks.

So here are all of the components for her new scholarly ensemble. Let's start off with the Skirt and blouse set, shall we? Then we may with follow her Cape and Hat set. Both will have Display copies so that visitors may see how it all fits together as an ensemble or outfit. These might contrast well with the already posted blue color choice. I don't know. I haven't had time to see much of the two colors together.

There are new plans in the works for this doll!

There is a good bit of what I call "fussy cutting" in the following project. Moms or older siblings may wish to help the younger Paper Doll collectors in their households.

An Upgrade for the Evening Wrap Paper Doll Outfit

It now fits better and even looks better too!
Of course, this is only my own opinion. However, the shoulders needed a little adjusting, as well as the one side. The collar had to be upgraded, and this then had to be fitted into place. Other alterations have been made to the Evening Wrap's overall look, however. I much prefer this one to the older one.

Please read the credits and red letter guidelines below. Thanks!

The fan has had its color adjusted a slight bit. Also, the hair has a very formal, and--may I say--even a grownup look to it now, something which no young lady of Victoria's era would have been without. Not, that is, for any special outing such as an evening out with her grandmother to a theatre in London's West End! For that occasion, her grandmother has generously leant her this wrap to use in the carriage on the way to and from the theatre.

I have stood her on a fine carpet, to protect the wrap's hem. This should fit right to the base of the doll's standard. Speaking of which, I imagine that a card stock support style standard, affixed to the back of each doll, might be helpful. I'll try and offer a few suggestions with a little pattern later on, once I have enough time.

Notice the fancy new enameled hairpin, tinted just so to match the embroidery of the wrap. She is also wearing a borrowed pair of her grandmother's golden "earbobs." Her collar now fits the New Look version of the darkest haired doll, butI imagine that the hair could be simply cut away from that collar to accommodate other New Look versions of the doll. I really do like that darker haired version, for I feel certain that that is how she really ought to have looked since the start of her existence here in the Studio's blog collection. Believe me, the neck area did change for the New Looks.

Those New Look Choices (5 in all) may be found at the following link HERE. All new hats will have hair included from now on, as I think that this will aid with the fit. When less hair is needed, simply snip a little bit of it away from an outfit.

Moms will probably wish to reinforce this outfit with a second sheet of paper. I recommend glue stick (Uhu brand is my standing favorite) or double sided tape for this. Or, perhaps printing the outfit onto a slightly heavier bond weight of paper might help.

"Fussy cutting."
This project will require a good bit of fussy cutting, in my opinion. I'd go straight for the finest scissors or sheers that you have to hand. I tend to use manicure scissors for super refined cutting, and larger scissors for simpler, easier cuts. A younger child's frustration would only tend to spoil any fun, so my guess is, it would be better for a parent or old enough sibling to tend to this task. Just a tip.

The Hair Tab
This is intended to help add a little stability to the outfit while on the actual doll. I did not have time to test this theory. Please let me know if it is useless or if it works poorly, and I will see what changes I can make to this design. I suggest top edge glue stick swipe, adding tiny amounts until the fit will actually work for you.

Happy Playtime Creativity!

NOTE:
Borders should be set at around one fourth or quarter of an inch on your printer or copier, otherwise, apart of the wrap's long train could be lost.

Free Paper Doll Cloak and Hat

Made to match Victoria's Geography Lesson Outfit from Yesterday

Please read our credits and the red letter guidelines below. Thanks so much!

She had no outerwear other than one fancy coat to be worn for a special theatre night, and so I knew that it was time to begin adding a few accessories to the paper doll's wardrobe. I will certainly try and make at least a few more things for your Playtime fun when time permits.

Some people would call this article of clothing a "cape," while others might call it a "cloak." It is not full length. I am still looking for just the right coats and full length capes for our Victoria, who is about to enter a course of study so that she might become a linguist or a language teacher. The outfit which it is intended to cover may be found at the link HERE.

The cape or cloak was designed and fitted to the geography lesson dress. The very same book was left in position, in order to match the geography Lesson outfit. The shadow can always be cut away from the cape's book, if necessary. One hand is still holding the book, although at a different spot on its cover. There is now a leather glove on that hand. A few little details have been added to that glove to make it look more genuine in style.

The hat has been altered from before. Regular visitors to this blog will recognize its basic shape as being from 4 earlier outfits. It comes with a slightly altered hairstyle at the back, to fit period styles of the era. However, it is just different enough to require a differently fitting Tab. Fitting the hat to the doll might be a bit tricky. Moms are encouraged to assist and to try small swipes of glue near the top edge of the tab first, adding any further swipes necessary for just the right fit.

For Victoria's new look, which comes with 5 new hair color choices, please visit the link HERE. Included there are 5 new downloads, each one with a different looking doll. Simply notice the matching number in the Display at that post, then download accordingly.

Lastly, I'd like to thank everybody for taking the time to look at the outfit from yesterday, as well as at this one. It makes me smile to think that somebody from somewhere in this big, wide world of ours might be playing with that doll or her clothes at this very hour.
:)

Free Schoolroom Outfit for the Paper Doll

Victoria is a Scholar!

(Please read the red letter guidelines for use at the bottom of this post. This outfit has taken much time and effort in order to make it ready for the free use being offered today. Thank you for respecting this gift.)

She really loves to ride her bicycle, or to go hacking through the countryside with her friends on one of her grandmother's horses, but our Victoria also loves the study of foreign places. She is learning to improve her foreign language skills, along with her study of history.

Her grandmother's library has many treasures on its shelves, including the one that Victoria is now holding. This is a very old Geography book, an 1865 edition, written initially during the 1500's by a Renaissance explorer. This was later translated into English and later edited by a man named Clements Markham. The author is the famed explorer of Peru, a man named Pascual de Andagoya, who lived a very adventurous existence. Born 1495AD (or CE), his life would end in the year 1548AD or (CE).

Victoria is fascinated by distant places and their history. She is excited to begin traveling again, now that she is back home in Great Britain and residing at her grandmother's London house. Her summer visits with relatives and friends in America has reminded her of her genuine enjoyment of the process of travel.

Her grandmother wishes to make it possible for her to have some more advanced schooling before she's finished growing up. She is thinking of enrolling Victoria in a special academy for young ladies, in order to foster her granddaughter's inquisitive temperament. During her holiday time off Grandmother Lacey intends to spend time with Victoria abroad, perhaps even on the classic Grand Tour.

The Display this time will be of the newer look, the choice with the fair hair. This outfit might end up being given two or more color ways for you to choose from. This first (or possibly only) one will be a lovely combination of grayish blue skirt paired with a softer blue blouse.
Happy Creative Playtime!

3 New Color Choices for the Free Autumn Paper Doll Outfit

Victoria's Autumn Walking Costume in 3 Color Choices

I love this dress. It was a tough fashion plate to work with, but I think that it has turned out to be a fun project. Please read the red letter guidelines below. Thanks so much.

Here are 3 new color choices for the dress. It may not be as vivid as the first version, and is also lacking leaves, but I thought that some people might not care for the leaves or for the colors used in the very first first version. For that version, you may go HERE. The hat has been added onto a bit at the back in these 3 new color choices. There is a new Tab for it as well.

So, which do you like best, Plum, Blue or Teal? I really do not think that I could choose between the three, although that plum color is really edging close to first place with me.

Victoria's New Look

Five New Looks for Victoria the Paper Doll

Note: Copyrights apply for everything in this post. Thank you for protecting my rights as artist.

This has been such a fun project! It  has actually taken a little time every day for quite a while to manage to get it to look better. Though I am still not 100% satisfied, I am happier with this paper doll's new look than I ever was with her old one. Please read the red letter Guidelines at the bottom of this post. Thank you.

I've chosen to keep the doll's body size and shape the same so that every outfit should still fit. Hats might need to be refitted to her new hairstyle, but all dresses should still fit her just fine. Please notify me over at G+ with any fitting problems that you might be having, and I will see what I can do. Otherwise, scissors and some careful cutting with them might be the answer. I doubt that there'll be a problem, but I couldn't test every outfit.

Below, first you'll see a Display of the way the doll's hair has changed, in 5 different colors. I've chosen to upgrade the skin on her face a little bit, but have left her eyes dark due to technical and aesthetic issues. (She also looks a little bit older, which would make sense, as she is now heading for the age of 20.)

After that, guests will find Download Links to the various color ways being offered. Each doll will have a corresponding number to the ones used in the Display. So it would be wise to look for that number prior to choosing which one to print, and then go from there.

More outfits for this doll have been in the works for months. These do take time. Please respect the credits and the red guidelines below. Thank you.

Happy playtime creativity!

Free Victorian Paper Doll Autumn Outfit

Victoria Has an Autumn Walking Costume Now!

This time, there is a brand new look for this paper doll, isn't there? Shortly, there will hopefully be a new post offering the doll with updated hair. She's older now, and perhaps a little more mature. Also, I was never truly pleased with the look of her hair, which had a greenish cast to it. Neither was I pleased with the look of the doll's skin, due to some resolution issues.

Once upon a time, after young ladies reached a certain age, they began wearing their hair up in elaborate coiffures, rather than loose upon their shoulders, or tied back as Victoria's hair has been for a long time. Please read the red letter guidelines below the images listed here. Thank you.

The hat could prove a bit tricky to use. My advice here would be to use an actual bit of feather instead of the mere paper, if at all possible. I expect that guests will know just what to do.

The tab, upper right, in the download version, may be attached for a proper fit only through a trial and error process. It is a silhouette version of the hat, but without the feather. I'd try to use a very small bead of glue near the top edge first prior to trying it on your doll.

This dress has its flaws. It comes from a very old fashion plate from the New York Public Library. That library holds all copyrights to their image collection, to a certain extent, including for this image. It is therefore to be kept free. It is to be shared, studied, and perhaps even traded, although never to be sold.

The alterations to the fashion plate were extensive, in order to assure a clean fit for the paper doll. The leaves were added, along with the umbrella, as an afterthought.

Happy Autumn Playtime creativity!

Autumn Denim Collage Set 2 Ways

Autumn is Denim Season!

Earlier on, the Studio offered Collage Backgrounds in several different color ways, including denim blue. This was based upon the Pretty Papers collection which was begun here over 4 years ago. The original paper is well over 100 years old, and is an end sheet from an antique book in my own collection. Please read the red letter guidelines at the very bottom of this post.

The cloth buttons of this set are likewise in the Public Domain category, although these have had to be altered somewhat and now have even been colored to make the set a bit more fun to use. The acorns are cut from the same Pretty paper Collage backgrounds.

The links to the original backgrounds and the first 2 accessory sets may be found below.

Recently, the first mix and match sets with the same color ways as the backgrounds were offered. On offer today are two different ways with the stitching to the pocket. Other than that, these two sets are identical. One will have black stitching, while the other one will have tan colored stitching instead.

Shown first, below, is the Display Example of some possible ways to use this set. Following that will be a Display Copy of the set with black topstitching on the pocket. And following that will be the version with tan "thread" instead.

For the original Background Set, you may go HERE.

Free Photograph of a Farmer Who's Been Hard at Work

PPS™ Graphic: A Hardworking Farmer in 2 Ways

I don't know about you, but my blood runs deep within farming history here in the USA. We used to visit the old family farm when I was a child. I've shucked corn, helped care for various livestock animals, and even helped with haying at one point. This taught me to respect the farming and ranching community deeply.

So here is one more salute to the time of haying and harvesting. My visitors can expect at least one more new Harvest offering here for the year very soon, hopefully.

This one has had to be cleaned up a little bit. The scanned image may be in the Public Domain, yet it had lint and grit here and there which required removing. This proved to be a bit of a challenge, as anyone who's done the haying knows just how big and dusty and messy a job that is! Bits of flotsam and flakes of hay fly simply everywhere! Hay gets into everything, so sorting the real from the false was a bit of a problem for yours truly.

I am offering this old photograph in 2 color ways: sepia toned and regular black and white.

Happy Harvest Creativity!
