An Irish Journey: On the Road to Killarney

Today's posting is of a scanned image out of our library, from the pages of a volume containing Thackeray's "Irish Sketches," and printed in the latter third of the 1800's. Instead of a motor coach of today, here we have a long cart, exposed to fresh breezes and fine air. The road to Killarney is a beautiful one, full of many pleasant views, all in Ireland's special greenery. It is a lovely region, indeed.
So here it is, our offering for today. The children running behind and alongside the cart are truly tragic--perhaps an indication of famine's grip, if not simple poverty. An indication of the times, before social welfare was given to the peoples of Great Britain and its protectorate. All the same, a different, and we hope, enjoyable offering.
We are enjoying the morning with a dose of the Chieftains, Irish music at its finest.
