Women's Shoes of 1900

This is a re-post of a prior offering at this blog, the links for which are no longer available.
Aren't these fun to look at? Each one says something about women's shoes of the very late Victorian era as it was in the year 1900. I had to choose from dozens to make this Collage Set for you. I also improved and tidied up the looks of each shoe with background. This is actually an older post that I could not find a proper link for owing to technical difficulties. I found the image in my files, and have added it to storage for you via my Download link below.

Please see the red Guidelines at the foot of this post. Thank you.

Women Cyclists of the 1890's Graphic

Let's head for the hills with our hats pinned on securely!

Isn't this old illustration both interesting and fun? The women being shown in the foreground are covered, literally, from the neck down, and yet they have been exercising during warmer weather. I find that somewhat astonishing, don't you?

Despite my repairs and work on this particular project, I am leaving it in the Public Domain. Please observe all copyrights and red letter Guidelines at all other types of posts here at this blog.
Thank you.

The woman in blue is wearing "bloomers" or a form of knee-length cycling trousers. Her hat has a slightly masculine and sporty flair, while the cut of her suit's jacket shows a definitely feminine (and corseted) figure. Notice her sensible, flat heeled shoes. Such a style was viewed as being innovative at that time.

The woman in pink is dressed less for sport and more as though she might possibly be on an errand of some sort. Women were really set free by their modern bicycles in the latter part of the 1800's and could be found free wheeling from place to place in dry weather on roads in town and country during the late 1800's. This continued on into the early 1900's. Nowadays, bicycles are seen as commonplace for sport and for commuting.

This brief clip from the series, "The 1900 house" can give us a small taste of what cycling must have felt like for women during that late Victorian era, when cycling for women was becoming more and more respectable and less and less disliked byVictorian critics of women's sports.

Such an adventure this would have been for any woman!

Happy sporting creativity!

Victorian Era Seed Packet Art

This has had to be changed radically by me in order to make it both a little more more usable and attractive.

Whenever I find something as fun to look at as this image truly is for me, I feel a genuine urge to clean it up and make it look fresher.

Please respect my time, effort, and (therefore) also my copyrights. Also, please observe the red letter Guidelines below. Thank you.

I really like the way that the young man is standing comfortably with his booted feet in the summertime sun. The contrast between his comfort (open collar, rolled up sleeves) on an extra warm and sunny day and the long sleeves, high collars and fuss and frill of the two ladies aboard their little two wheeled gig makes me smile. The one young woman is enjoying the flavor of the slim slice of watermelon the boy has just offered her. Perhaps there will be a sale?

There are melons in the foreground and in the background of this picture as well. It's such a pretty summer scene, that I simply couldn't resist the opportunity of sharing it here at the Studio's blog.

There's just one problem, however. I am fresh out of melons and yet would have enjoyed a nice, refreshing melon slice snack today!
:)

Happy Summertime Creativity!

Butterfies in Flight

From an old full color plate illustration.

I was in the mood for something light, airy and pretty. I hope this suits your mood, too.

Please see the Guidelines below for more information. Thank you.

I've cleaned and cleared this one up a little, plus brightened it somewhat, as it was looking a bit drab and tired. And butterflies need to be full of light and loveliness, don't they?

A Pocketful of Happy Ideas

Ready for Spring ~ a new Book Artist Set

I like the young lady's smile, don't you? Can her mind be turned to thoughts of the first spring breeze? Or could it be love? Or could it be that we will never know for sure?

This time, all margins are 1/4 inch wide (on all 4 sides) and at their narrowest points, so it's best to change your printer settings accordingly.

Please observe all Credits and red letter Guidelines at this blog, especially as they often will differ from post to post. Thank you.

Below please note the display of the full set, minus the silk covered buttons. This set has its very own color coordinated background page, in a separate download. It was designed to work well against a number of other colors, including white and cream as well, but guests may find that they already have other colors in their collections that will work very nicely, too.

This set has been designed to work for book pages of all sorts as well as either in or on cards and other projects. You can expect more sets in other themes and color ways shortly, some of them in other hues of pink and rose, so it might be wise to pencil the set's name onto the back of the Background, just in case. I'd file them separately, in fact, in my own home computer first.

Also offered is a separate download of the very same set, reversed or flipped around to face in the opposite direction. It is always nice to have choices, isn't it?

Note:
Some trimming might be required at the ends of the pocket's flaps before you tuck them under when gluing, depending upon how they are used. I thought it would be better to create them as wide as they are to allow for some custom trimming. Anyone can trim, but most of us simply cannot make too narrow a flap any wider than it already is.

Another Hopefully Helpful Hint:
Have you ever tried using MicroGlaze from Judikins? It is a really wonderful item to use in book arts, I find. I've used it to seal surfaces, to prevent pages from sticking together, and so on. It's got multiple uses. Tim Holtz now has his very own customized version of this very useful product, too. A very tiny amount does the job, so don't be fooled by the smallness of the jar it comes in. It's been worth every penny that I paid for it since I bought it, and I'm not done using all of my first jar yet.

I hope that you'll enjoy this new playful set with your family and friends while you share your
Happy Creativity!

A Funny Watercolor: Visitors Gawk at a New Ceiling

A Post-Regency Cartoon

Aren't they funny?
:)

I can imagine having run across just such a cluster of funny people with their heads all tilted back, and all looking at the same features in a brand new grand building. Of course, I can likewise imagine having been one of them!

I can also imagine how this fun little graphic could be used. The space above the heads of the people could be filled with humorous additional graphics for a fun collage. Words might also be placed in the same area. It's simply crying out to be played with, isn't it?

While this graphic's original version is in the Public Domain, this one had to be changed somewhat and updated. This does take time. Please credit Plush Possum Studio if you use it. Thank you.

Antique Electric Advertising

It's shocking!~Everything's electric today!

To a Mr. J.M. Riley, I want to tip my hat today. He obviously used his own patented electric comb, although not only on his scalp. And, no, he is not wearing some fancy or weird collar under his chin. That is actually a beard growing out of his neck! Don't you pity his poor wife (if he even had one)?

Please see the red letter Guidelines below the image. Thank you.

Accompanying Mr. Riley and his strange contraption is a far more useful electrical apparatus: a Grafonola!

Grafonola was the trademark name for a Graphophone record playing system invented at the turn of the last century. For more information about those machines, please follow the link HERE.

"A Precious Memory"
by Bob Crosby and His Bobcats
on a genuine Grafonola.
(Bing Crosby's brother)

My grandmother had a somewhat more modern version of the record playing machine shown in the advertisement below. I only heard it play once or twice, as I recall. It used to sit on her old fashioned living room rug at the front of her house.

Book Artist Accessory Set No. 5

Wintertime Accessories for Book Artists, Crafters, and Digi Scrappers!

I am dreaming of a warming fireside and a lovely, steaming cup of homemade hot chocolate. While I was assembling this set, my thoughts kept drifting towards a moment of enjoying just such a treat. I can't think why, other than that the wintry theme of the colors and the snow scene with the lady in her little private sled or sleigh took my thoughts toward chocolate.

Shown below will be two versions, one of the set itself, and the other with some suggested uses for the set. Provided are two different choices for my creative friends: Digital PNG and Print JPG. Both downloads are completely free, although I do request that these never be sold as a set or broken up for use in separate sets.

For the Harvest: a Free Illustration

A Free Harvest Graphic of Old Alsace

Isn't this an interesting taste of the world's past? Most people were farmers only a century or two ago. Then heavy industry was introduced, and mining became more of a concern so that metals could be had for the use of industrial machines. (This led to more coal mining, as well)

We have mainly forgotten some of the simpler joys of bringing our harvest in from the fields, as a personal "harvest" would appear to happen nearly every time that there is a new paycheck.

I respect the farming peoples of the world, as I do all working men and women. This old print will hopefully teach us a little history about the region of Alsace, along with their harvesting season. The woman with the rake is a favorite of mine, yet they all look interesting to me.

Alsace would later become a hotly contested area during two World Wars, during which times much history was lost due to the vagaries and ugliness of war.

Let's bring our Harvest in today with love and concern for our neighbors! And let's share the bounty with those less fortunate than ourselves as well.

Happy Harvest Creativity everybody!

More Free Oceanic Beauty Accessories

Oceanic Accessories in 3 Colors

These were created to match and blend or even contrast with the backgrounds and other Accessory Sets, some of which will soon be offered here at the Studio's blog. I love the dancing starfish! My favorites would have to be the shells, however.

HINT: It is recommended that when using adhesives of any kind that the shells be glued only to the photo corner holders, and never directly to photographs themselves. This will allow for later removal of photographs in future. It's nice to have the freedom to change a memory book or a scrapbook once in a while, isn't it?

For Autumn: A Free Harvest Graphic of Nuts

Antique Autumn Harvest print

I love old pen and ink drawings on parchment, don't you? The way the parchment ages, and the ink with it, generally makes for a soft, warm set of tones for us to enjoy.

And it's such a pretty old document, that it seemed irresistible. It has had to have a few things done to it, of course. The size could only be expanded so much before it began to lose a bit of its clarity, so it is neither very large nor very expandable. However, it was just pretty enough to make it useful for collage, decoupage, Book Artistry, etc.

It is fast becoming one of my favorite finds in years.  A few clean-up skills had to be applied, as the machine it was scanned with had some dust, lint and possibly even a hair or two on its surface during scanning. It's always a matter of choice, as to how much cleaning could ruin the antique tone of any image, and so any try at so-called "perfection" would have simply ruined all of its antique charm. After all, it is well over 400 years old, and thus it has earned the right to look its age! But this just makes it more fun to look at, doesn't it?

This one is in the Public Domain, and that is where I think it needs to remain.

From the 1600's, a very volatile yet interesting century, and in the same year as the Great Fire of London, here is our latest Public Domain gift for our guests.

New Free Images to Harvest

Free Harvest Image for Digital or Print

This was in the PPS archives, and it actually is more interesting to look at than I'd at first assumed. I love the mottled paper and the lovely artwork, don't you?
:)

This image was in the Public Domain when first found. It has been stretched only slightly to keep its resolution better, and then repaired a bit here and there, in order to make the colors appear more crisp and alive. This was done using Photoshop brushes along with some opacity settings and a few other techniques I won't bore my guests by mentioning (I probably cannot recall everything that was done to it anyway!). I see this image as a pleasant reflection on the harvests of the past.

Please see the red letter Guidelines below the image. Thank you.

Free Accessories for Book Artists #1

Create a Pocket for your altered book with our NEW set

This set is all about book altering, art journals and visual journals, although I suppose even some scrapbooking fans might find some fun uses for today's design.

Personally, I've played around with books for years. I've altered several, and enjoy art journals very much. I've built pockets, pullouts, doors, and altered page poems, and even once joined in altered book shows. Today's digital art crowd may find this set especially useful, as it's been offered in both digital PNG and for print JPG formats.

The shoe had to be significantly altered, but the most work was put into refurbishing the man's waistcoat front. But the embroidery! Just imagine, my friends, how many days, weeks, or perhaps months of work it took to make such garments! Even now, it sends a shiver right through me.We left out both upper and lower tabs on the waistcoat fronts, as adding any of significant size would have crowded out part of the margin we like to use. I suppose our guests might choose to add some of their own. I also like the idea of using lace or pretty tape or just plain glue in place of a tab at top and bottom. We'll leave that up to our guests this time.
:)

Shown below, first in our line up of pictures, is but one example as to how this set might be utilized in the addition of pockets and small tucking places for altered books, art journals, or scrapbooks.

You'll notice our set might have come straight from the old courts of Versailles in France of the eighteenth century. However, in the example, we chose to mix centuries, combining the eighteenth, nineteenth, and finally early twentieth centuries in one single example. This was to offer suggestions on how to combine centuries within the same design. To allow the colors to do all of the talking made best sense.

So here it is, and I do hope this will be of some use. Please note the beige colored tabs attached to the embroidered waistcoat portions of our set. For those of us with print capabilities, the fold line is obvious between the tab and the waistcoat.

As for the pretty little shoe, the Studio's version simply cut away the shoe's interior. I think it looks tiny enough to actually fit Cinderella's foot, wouldn't you agree?
:)

I love the hand embroidered shank style buttons on the waistcoat, and so there are several offered in the set for you to play with in your art.

We hope to soon expand our Altered Book Accessories line for you. Quite frankly, it is a favorite of this PPS artisan.

The following work was built with Public Domain material, yet it is now no longer copyright free. The design belongs to Plush Possum Studio.

Please see the red letters below for our guidelines. We prefer to keep it free for our artist friends around the world.
Happy Creativity!

More Fun Frames for Scrappers (Digi or Print)

More of our Favorite Things

I love old post cards, old postage stamps and old ephemera in general here at PPS. In the past, I've offered the public many choices for playing around with such a theme.

It is a fun theme!
:)

Today, I offer a new Frame Set for both DigiScrapping as well as for Collage of all sorts. I do hope you'll enjoy this particular gathering of images, and find them of use to you in the creating of new works of art.

I've used mainly the Studio's own archived images in order to make this set, although a few additional things did get used this time. Notice the detailing added, all of it in Photoshop. I've spliced a lovely old record album sleeve portrait of an opera star wearing a fabulous hat to one side on two of these frames. Scanned by me, she has been waiting for a chance to star in one of my designs. She may yet find herself in some other works by me here later on as well.
:)

Also used were some old postage stamps. I do try and offer guests enough choices per set for the joy of it. The far left frame is 3 inches by 5 inches in size, while the rest do vary. The faux Photoshop generated buttons I've made from ephemera and postage stamps are all now available in a wider variety of sizes for this set exclusively. I do love accessories!

Though every image used in this particular set currently has Public Domain or copyright free status, please remember to attribute the Studio if you use any of this work.  I ask also that the sets here never be redistributed or repackaged for sale at all, ever. They are a gift from me to the public. Thank you for respecting my wishes in this matter with your
Happy Creativity!

NOTE: Set margins on printers at around 1/4 or a fourth of an inch, as margins are 1/2 or half an inch.
This will hopefully improve chances for a better print copy.

Can It Be "Manly" to Make Art?

We here at PPS do see it as an adventure in which anyone may share. To enjoy the creative process is a human quality, shared by few animals, to be sure.

So is it a manly pursuit, to make art?

Of course it is!

We offer our first "manly" blog candy ever in hopes of increasing more interest in creative blogging and art-making in the men among us.
So move over, ladies, and let's make some room for our friends, the gents!

Antique Happy Birthday Bicycle Postcard

Today's offering is a front side-only image of a young boy riding a colorfully decorated bicycle. It's a Happy Birthday greeting card with a lot of charm, one we've held back on posting for a while. The truth is, we would normally have posted both sides of this card, except the reverse is pretty blah, with no redeeming value as far as looks go. It's even a bit too damaged to clean up for you.
But its front is certainly a different story!
We truly love every bright feature of this little boy's cheering message, right down to his polka dotted uniform.
He looks like he could be riding in a his home town May Day parade, doesn't he? Too charming to be missed out on!
One more feature of note: We are offering this card at a slightly higher resolution than our usual 300dpi. This one was actually scanned in at a resolution of 400dpi, a factor we hope to enlarge on in our future scannings for you.
We ask that you will please credit us wherever applicable with having supplied our time and effort, along with any of the Studio's private ephemera collection, by mentioning us in your posts and/or in the written materials lists for any art made using our stock. And Thank You!
Happy Creativity!

Celebrating Jane Austen All Weekend!

For those of you used to PPS's posting an item or two each time, this will be a departure from the usual.

Please observe the red letter Guidelines located at the foot of this post. Thank you.

Today, American time, is Jane Austen's Birthday, and we'd like to do her world honor by adding a full range of fun images for kids and adults alike to "fussy cut" and play with much like we use paper dolls, but without dressing.
That's right! We have a cast of characters in various outfits, along with a selection of backgrounds (both public and not so public) to add to the fun.
Also expect to see a lovely Regency style lady of some distinction toasting her toes next to a hearth.
I can see dioramas, tableaus, and various fun ways with collage out of this set!
It's taken us a long while to process it, which is why we've not been online as much here of late. We do hope the wait has been worth it for our friends here and abroad.
Not everything has the same format, although we offer several items in our popular Digi PNG format as well as in print style.
So, here they are, our cast of characters, along with a few fun ways of displaying them!
Happy Birthday to Jane Austen!
And Happy Creativity to all our blogosphere friends
